The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis seeks a Visitor Experience Associate (VEA) to join our team. Reporting to the Visitor Experience and Events Manager, VEAs are integral to ensuring that visitors have a meaningful and satisfying experience at CAM. This is a part-time position with a variable work schedule that is dependent on programs and events. Regular Museum hours are Wednesday–Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Friday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. VEAs must have flexible schedules and work between 16 and 25 hours per week, with evening and weekend availability.

 

Responsibilities

/  Greet and check in visitors with a welcoming attitude

/  Provide customer service to visitors at the front desk and in the Shop; promote and process memberships

/  Staff the galleries during open hours and select events to provide artwork security; promote an enjoyable and safe museum environment

/  Maintain knowledge about CAM and exhibitions, programs and other Museum activities; answer visitor questions as needed 

/  Communicate Museum policies to visitors with clarity and positivity

/  Assist with evaluation and survey projects, including interacting with visitors and families to assess their experience as well as processing data

/  Set up and break down equipment, furniture, and materials for events

/  Support Learning & Engagement department with guided tours for groups and individuals; participate in ongoing exhibition training 

/   Work with other CAM staff as needed to implement policies, manage event set-up, maintain gallery spaces, and assist with other projects as requested

/  Ensure the cleanliness of galleries and public spaces by performing daily housekeeping tasks

/  Accurately track and report on attendance and event data

/  Report issues to Visitor Experience and Events Manager and/or Visitor Experience Coordinator

/  Other duties as assigned    

Qualifications

/  Customer service and/or retail experience

/  Strong listening and communication skills  

/  Friendly and welcoming demeanor, with an appreciation for accessibility and inclusion

/  Strong attention to detail  

/  Reliable and punctual

/  Ability to balance multiple needs in a dynamic environment and adapt to change

/  Ability to think proactively and take initiative 

/  Ability to stand in galleries for extended periods of time 

/  Ability to work weekends, evenings, and some holidays

  2. Interest in and/or curiosity about museums and contemporary art
  3. Art background a plus

Compensation

The pay rate for this position starts at $16/hour.

Education Assistant

The Education Assistant at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM) is responsible for assisting in the facilitation and development of public programming, in particular with youth and families. The specific programs include Play Dates, ArtReach Drop In Workshops, and CAM Connect Workshops, along with CAM’s participation in creative experiences at Fairs and Festivals. The Education Assistant shares in the responsibility for advancing the Museum’s community building by providing access for formal and informal groups including schools, groups with disabilities, seniors, families, and more. The position is part-time and reports to the Community Access Manager.

 

Responsibilities

/ Assisting Community Access Manager in tasks related to preparation and implementation of art activities and workshops.

/ Able to lead and assist youth in the execution of pre-planned art activities through public programs, workshops, and outdoor fairs and festivals.

/ Ability to work in a variety of situations and circumstances, including outdoor and/or active environments.

/ Help maintain an organized and clean environment for community workshops and programs. 

/ Help with maintenance and organization of the Play Space.

/ Assist with the upkeep of the Learning and Engagement Studio to maintain an organized, clean, and safe environment

/ Help with tracking participants attendance in programs overseen by the Community Access Manager. 

/ Help with the documentation of programs through photographs and video as permitted by participants. 

/ Identify, create, and/or modify instructional methods and resources to meet the needs of participants with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and abilities.

/ Provide a positive environment in which program participants are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process.

/ Able to work independently and represent the Museum in offsite locations.

/ Assistance with other duties assigned by the Community Access Manager.

 

Qualifications

/ A proven commitment to visual arts, education, and community engagement.

/ Enjoyment of art making and creative experiences.

/ Positive experience and enjoyment working with early childhood and elementary age children.

/ Have working experience along with confidence and clarity in communicating strategies that engage diverse groups, age ranges, and audiences.

/ Ability to lift and move heavy items between 20-50 lbs. Help with transporting supplies will be requested. 

/ Ability to effectively operate a computer; Google Drive, Calendar, Docs, and Sheets; copier and other office machinery in relation to job productivity.

/ Some college coursework in fine art, art history, art education, or related field; equivalent experience will also be considered. 

/ Ability to help several individuals simultaneously during art making activities.

/ Must have a flexible schedule to work days, evenings, and weekends as programs require, including on the second Saturday of the month from 8:30–11:30 am.

/ A satisfactory background check is required.

Compensation

This is a part-time position, with an hourly compensation of $20 per hour. The Education Assistant is anticipated to work an average of 10 hours per month to start, with a guaranteed minimum of 8 hours per month and a maximum of 15 hours per month.
